The latest installment of David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs no Introduction released on May 4 on Netflix, features actress, comedian, writer, and producer Tina Fey. Letterman, the 71-year-old interviewer and comedian, gracefully yet concisely interviews with a rare level of thoroughness and complexity that comes from many years of being an interviewer.

The show is rather simple in its design: David Letterman has a guest that he thoroughly interviews about their career and accomplishments, and sometimes travels with the guest to a significant place from their life. However, it is done so with a unique charm, perspective, and thoroughness that draws the audience into the story of his guests. In this instance, the guest was Tina Fey, someone who I admittedly was not extremely interested in, but was quickly made to be interested in by the interview style and content.

The roughly 50 minute interview covers topics from Fey’s first steps, to comedy to her work on Saturday Night Live, to her current projects, and it even touches on some of the controversy of her career. She discusses what it was like to be a female comedian when the profession was still mostly dominated by men, and how comedy has benefitted from the inclusion of women in the writing and production of comedy shows such as Saturday Night Live.

I found the interview and show to be extremely interesting, insightful, and captivating in its perspective and content. I would highly recommend giving it a watch, and the other episodes featuring the likes of Barack Obama, George Clooney, Malala Yousafzai, and Jay Z.
