For the first time this spring I’m acting in one of the school plays, and I’ve found that there is a misconception when it comes to theatre’s accessibility in comparison to other extracurriculars. However, it is just as accessible as any other after school activity.

There seems to be a special fear that comes with being on stage that keeps many people away from theatre. The thought of making a mistake in front of such a crowd is a nightmare to many, but is making a similarly drastic mistake in a sport just as stressful? Is it not the same fear of missing the game winning shot or losing at the state championship?

If your team loses, you lose as a group, but you would be mistaken to think it’s not the exact same thing for a play cast. In many ways we are like a soccer or baseball team. Each of us practices intensely for our roles and put in many hours after school, which culminate in our performances. Like a team, we all grow fond of each other, have our own inside jokes, and help each other if we stumble.

In my own person experience, auditioning was very intimidating because it was so foreign to me and I had never done anything like it. But, once I got over that it was how I remembered soccer tryouts feeling. You go, you try your best, and you wait for the results. It may be disappointing if you don’t succeed, but that’s just a part of it and there’s always next year.
