Christmas is here already…

As I write this, Halloween was four days ago, and I’ve already seen multiple stores selling Christmas merchandise, peppermint everything, fake Christmas trees, nutcrackers, and all. Christmas, or at least the marketing of it, starts earlier and earlier every year, and it’s starting to get annoying.

I love Christmas just as much as anyone else, but it’s starting to overlap with Thanksgiving, and its earlier arrival is reducing its value.

As previously mentioned, I’ve already started seeing Christmas stuff, and it’s only the first week of November. I’d like to keep fall for just a bit longer before I start to enjoy a winter wonderland, and while I’m not the biggest fan of Thanksgiving, I still would like to get through it before I enjoy Christmas.

It’s like going to your favourite restaurant for every meal. It isn’t special anymore because it’s so readily available. For me, the same thing is happening to Christmas: it is becoming less and less special the earlier it starts. Christmas should stay in December to keep it from getting old. We already devote a solid twelfth of the year to Christmas, longer than any other mainstream holiday in the US. It’s only good for maybe a month, but after that it gets old.

While I haven’t heard any Christmas music in public, I can feel it coming like an old woman feels a storm coming in her knees. However, I have heard a few people already listening to Christmas music, and… come on. It’s only the first week of November, I think we could all wait until after Thanksgiving at least.
