Q: Where did you grow up and go to high school?

A: I grew up in Smithville, Missouri, and went to Smithville High School

Q: What classes were your favorite?

A: Creative writing and science electives like Geology and Astronomy.

Q: What activities did you do?

A: I played football, ran cross country, and was on the track team. I also did forensics + debate and was a member of the Astronomy Club: we’d camp on the weekends and look at stars with telescopes.

Q: What is one thing you did to be rebellious or in spite of your parents?

A: Listened to Jay-Z and drink Red Bull.

Q: What is one thing you regret doing in high school?

A: I had long blonde hair (like, down to my shoulders), and I died it black, but it turned gray instead. So I was a teenager with long gray hair, which confused people, and they referred to me as “Taylor Hicks,” a middle-aged man with gray hair who won the 5th season of American Idol.

Q: What is one trend you liked when you were in high school and want to make a comeback?

A: Emo music. Bands like Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World, and Taking Back Sunday were rad. Now, kids listen to terrible music like J. Cole.

Q: What is one trend you didn’t like when you were in high school?

A: Graphic t-shirts with slogans on them. If you want to deliver a message, tell someone in person.

Q: What is some advice you have for current high schoolers?

A: Seek out people who are different from you and have other interests than you do. It’ll make you better.
