When God created man, He said in Genesis 1:26, “Let us make man in our image,…and let them rule…over all the earth.”As is known and fully believed by Christians, God has given us a calling in addition to creating us with qualities that resemble Himself. He has given us a commission, an anointing, a vocation. And, drum roll please, it is: to be God’s “sovereign emblem,” as scholar Gerhard von Rad so exquisitely explained. We are to steward, love, live with, and care for the earth.

While it’s safe to say that I grew up with this realization bouncing around my worldview along with my Veggie Tales Soundtracks, the actual weight of it hadn’t hit me until a few years ago, and then again, just a little harder, in this last year.

Our job as humans is to take care of the earth. Plain and simple. My family was never really big on recycling, and I’m personally too lazy to get up on Saturdays and “Save the Manatees!” But, as a part of creation and employed by God Himself to nourish it, I started to think about what I should be doing now, as a very underactive teenager, to fulfill that job.

I think the biggest thing, besides the obvious recycling, is simply taking initiative for my purpose. If I see a piece of trash on the floor, I could pick it up. If I see someone in pain, I could do my best to comfort and be there for them. If I see an injustice, I could do something about it, or go to someone who can if it is out of my control. If I see anything that isn’t as it should be according to God’s Will, the way He originally intended, I could, no, I need to set it right.

The point is, we need to be present in the world, so present that when God finally evaluates our work, He can say, “Well done.” We need to enjoy, explore, and ultimately cherish creation. We need to get to work on the job God has entrusted to us.
